Blue bullet Handcycling

 Handcycle1.jpg

Perhaps the most efficient distance and human-powered mobility solution for people with lower body impairments, the handcycle is to people of limited mobility what the bicycle is to people of average mobility; a highly efficient way to convert muscle power into linear movement. Handcycling is rapidly becoming the alternative mobility device of choice for many wheelchair users, for exercise, for recreation, and for long distance (including marathon) or off-road competition.

Blue bullet Sailing

Martin 16 Sailboat cruising Lake Champlain

"To me, sailing equals freedom.  Freedom from the daily concerns of working and living with a visual impairment, freedom to compete on a level playing field, freedom from the judgments and assumptions of others, freedom to push the envelope and lay it on the line, freedom to express myself, freedom to know that I am in the driver's seat and that my decisions matter. I feel whole when I am sailing, like what I do and how I perform is a product of my knowledge and skill not of what others think or how they label me."  -Heather Berg

Blue bullet Sled Hockey

Sled hockey is the fast, exciting, rough n' tumble version of ice hockey played primarily by people with mobility disabilities. The game is essentially the same as traditional ice hockey. The major difference is every player sits in a sled with two hockey skate blades under the seat. In competitive games, hard checking, raised puck shooting, and penalty killing are as much a part of sled hockey as they are in “stand-up” hockey.

Blue bullet Wheelchair Basketball

Global in scope and participation, wheelchair basketball is played primarily by people with disabilities. In some countries, teams include both able-bodied and disabled athletes. The rules of wheelchair basketball are similar to those of basketball, including the 10-foot hoop for some classes, with accommodations mostly related to the physical presence of the wheelchairs.

Blue bullet Other Sports

A picture representing other disabled sports is described here.

While the NDAA has historically focussed on the sports described above, we are an evolving organization whose mission is not sport-specific. We seek people who are motivated to help achieve our mission of support and inclusion in other sporting endeavors. Have a passion? Bring it on!
