As the NDAA has developed, certain achievements have represented milestones for us and for the community of athletes with disabilities in Vermont and the region. Here are some of those milestones:

Lake Champlain Invitational Martin 16 Regatta (Sailing)

  • Launched in 2003, this accessible sailing event has become the Lake Champlain region's premier race for sailors with disabilities. It has grown in each of its three years, drawing boats and sailors from throughout New England, upstate New York, Quebec and Ontario.

Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation Quality of Life Challenge Grant (Sailing)

  • This highly competitive grant, approved in June 2005, and completed in March 2006, has enabled the NDAA to bring independent, fully accessible recreational and competitive sailing to the Lake Champlain region. Success in meeting the NDAA commitment under the Challenge Grant has brought supplemental funding from the CRPF for one fully accessible Martin 16 sloop and additional adaptive equipment to implement full accessibility for a second Martin 16.

French Foundation Grant (Ice Sled/Sledge Hockey)

  • A goal of NDAA has been to build a Vermont-based competitive sled hockey team to develop and train athletes interested in this very popular sport and Paralympic event. Thanks to a generous grant from the French Foundation, the NDAA was able to purchase 10 ice regulation hockey sleds, or sledges, enough to provide equipment for new and interested players during the startup phase of the program. This grant enabled the creation of The Vermont Sled Cats, who played their first competitive game during the 2005-2006 season.

Professional Handcycling Clinic

  • In 2004, the NDAA brought nationally ranked handcyclist and paralympic competitor Chris Klebl, of Colorado, to Burlington for a weekend handcycling clinic and ride. This was the first exposure to handcycling for many of the attendees, and the clinic resulted in purchases of new equipment, opening a world of recreation and competitive opportunities not previously known to some.
