Wheelers Shine at VT City Marathon

Handcycle Marathoner

This year's Key Bank Vermont City Marathon is history, with handcyclists turning in some record times.

Eleven competitors finished the 26.2 mile course in handcycles and push-rim wheelchairs. This year's winner Patrick Standen, 43, of Burlington set a new course record and personal best with a time of 1:43:00. Standen and second place finisher Bill Schwarz, of Kinderhook NY, all but pushed each other through the 26.2 miles, with benchmark times never more than a second apart.

NDAA members Jeremy Shortsleeve (So. Burlington) and Cleary Buckley (Burlington) placed third and fourth with times of 1:55:22 and 1:57:40 respectively. Past winner Johnny "Hollywood" McArdle (Montpelier, 2:09:34)) and newcomer Matt Smith (Essex Jct, 2:12:59) finished in sixth and seventh spots, and the field was rounded out by ninth place finisher Eric Rose (Manchester Ctr, VT 2:34:14), 10th place Andrea Kerr (Burlington, 2:44:02) and 11th place Donald "Sandy" Craige (Barre VT, 2:57:09).

Congratulations to all who took part in this exceptional challenge!
